"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning." ~ Fred Rogers
What is Play Therapy?
In therapy, each individual is best served when they are met where they are and conversed with in a language they understand. This is even more vital in work with children who are not only unique and individuals, but fall within a large developmental spectrum.
Play therapy allows clinicians to speak to children in their natural, complex language - the language of play. Children are instinctually driven to act out their inner worlds through narrative, metaphor, and feeling, as well as through spoken language. Play therapists are trained to interact in this process to facilitate growth, resilience, and a trusted relationship.

In play therapy, children are trusted to guide the process at their own pace as therapists have ensured a structure that will encourage safety and exploration within the child's tolerance. There is a wealth of research, including neuroscience, that supports the usefulness of play therapy for children with a variety of challenges. Best of all, the process of play therapy is a rewarding and encouraging one, even when it is hard work.
